From Dream to Reality

To celebrate the release date of my first published novel, I decided to blog about how I came up with the idea for the story. As cliché as it may sound, the truth is that the idea came from a dream I had.
I have very vivid dreams at times—and I love it! Even the scary or intense ones that cause my heart to race as I wake up in a cold sweat. Come to think of it, those are my favorite ones. I’ve found that I have poor recall of my dreams come morning, so I keep a notebook and pencil at my bedside—my husband is used to me turning the lamp on in the middle of the night to scribble the details of a dream down before I forget them. There are many times when I awake in the morning and read what I’ve written, excited to rediscover a grand dream and possible subject for a new writing project, only to discover that what seemed amazing at 3:00am, is gibberish at a more decent hour of the day.
That, however, was not the case when I dreamt about a group of teen-aged kids scrambling around in an underground setting, fighting for their place there. I wrote it down. It was still awesome in the morning. It was still exciting the next day. It stayed with me and demanded to be written weeks later.
That is where the initial premise came from for FIVE OUT OF THE DARK. I didn’t know of the Seattle Underground at that time, and thought of Chicago as the setting for the book. While researching things to do in Seattle before a family vacation there, I discovered that there is an Underground there with quite an amazing story. So, Seattle Underground it was.
I had another dream after I started writing FIVE, one of the few that hasn’t faded from my memory with time, and I knew I had to make it part of my story. I can’t tell you about it other than to say it’s now part of the end of the book, and my favorite scene.
I don’t always get my writing ideas from dreams, but I try to never fail to write down a good one for future reference.
Happy reading!!

Now Entering the Blogging World

Well, here goes, my first blog post. I’ll be using this blog mostly to keep you all informed about upcoming events and current and future writing projects.

I’m super excited for the Book Launch party where we’ll be celebrating the release of my first novel– Five: Out of the Dark. The new Grantsville Library has been absolutely wonderful to work with and I’m so glad they’re letting me have the party there. The outpouring of support from my hometown has been wonderful and I hope to see a big crowd on August 20th from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

Check out the Event calendar on my website to see what else is coming up.

I hope you all love the book!
